With the advent of autumn, I have again come to my annual realisation that I have nothing to wear. I thrive during the summer in light cotton dresses, but it's the autumn/winter season that I find the hardest to dress for. Now, I might be overreacting a little, as I definitely have enough to get me through the next few months, but when it's dark outside and I'm staring into my wardrobe with a background of drizzle and a cold breeze, I always get the urge to treat myself to some cosy knitwear, a new coat and a pair of sleek boots.

Although I'm largely content with what I own, there are a couple of gaps I can justify filling with a couple of key wardrobe staples; pieces I've probably over-worn now and are due a refresh. I managed to tick a few of these off with secondhand buys, and now it's time to take to the high street to get me over the finish line. Overwhelmed with options, I headed straight towards a reliable old favourite, walking right into Marks and Spencer. Having worn the brand's tights for school and bought my bras from there ever since my first fitting, M&S is still my first port of call when I'm looking to make a purchase. I find its collections almost always include the refined silhouettes I shop for most frequently—and often at very reasonable prices—and it's still nailing those fundamentals all these years later.

On the shop floor, I plucked a few key items that instantly caught my attention. Selecting a warm knit, a roomy coat, the perfect '90s-style leather jacket and a leopard-print blouse, I also grabbed some wearable denim, trending shoes and a couple of bags I couldn't resist giving a closer look. To the changing room! Size-wise, I tend to sit between a 10 and a 12, often opting for the former for my bottom half and the latter for tops and jackets. Style Notes: I have to confess that I'm a bit of a sceptic when it comes to faux leather. Perhaps because I spent so much of my teens in head-to-toe polyester, I'm now very reluctant to buy any "leather" item that isn't 100% genuine. As such, I was incredibly surprised to find myself falling in love with this faux-leather jacket. In a rich brown shade that falls somewhere between camel and chocolate, this slim-fitting jacket has a boxy cut and a neat finish that reminded me of the '90s-inspired styles I always look out for.

Cropping slightly above the hips, this jacket features a zip fastening and an elasticated hem that ensures a polished silhouette and some extra insulation. Wanting a comfortable, slightly oversized fit, I reached for a size 14, which was fitted enough not to appear too big, but large enough to wear over a knit—exactly the kind of layer I need for these in-between days. Suffice it to say, this sub-£60 jacket went straight onto my purchase pile.

With a slim fit up top, I wanted a little bit of volume on the bottom and tried on M&S' Wide Palazzo Leg Jeans and a pair of chunky Chelsea boots to ground my outfit. The jeans fit comfortably in a regular-length size 10. The great thing about M&S jeans is that they're available in short, regular and long lengths so you can get a much better fit.

Style Notes: As someone with broad shoulders, I often find a V-neck more flattering than a crew neck. Following that same formula, I generally gravitate more towards cardigans than jumpers, as I can wear it buttoned up all the way, or break up the shape by leaving the top button undone. Ever in need of more knitwear—I can imagine that everyone in the UK feels this way right now—I was keen to discover M&S' latest offering. After a loop around the store, I came straight back to the first style that caught my eye: this pretty argyle cardigan.

In a light yellow shade with grey and blue accents, this cosy layer spoke to the softer, brighter side of autumn/winter dressing. Adorned with gleaming gold buttons, the cardigan looks well beyond its £35 price tag, and the wool composition adds a snug touch. I tried it on with and without a layer underneath and found it was soft enough to wear without a base. I selected this cardigan in a size 12, which was perfectly roomy and very comfortable. I kept the rest of my outfit fairly neutral so as not to detract from the cardigan's colour and print, opting for jeans in a sculptural horseshoe cut and a pair of burgundy ballet flats.

I couldn't resist grabbing this expensive-looking suede bag to try with the outfit, and I found it paired perfectly with the cosy knit, earning it a place on my wish list.

Style Notes: I'm a firm believer that if you fall in love with a winter coat, you simply have to buy it. From November to April, a full-length coat is practically your entire outfit and thus needs to really encapsulate your style. Having spotted just the kind of coat I could easily see sitting in my wardrobe, this checked style made its way to the changing rooms with me. Initially struck by the grown-up print, I found the checked motif interesting but not too attention-grabbing—making it feel versatile and easy to style with a broad range of looks.

I'm entirely obsessed with trench coats, so I tend to shop for wool coats in a similar silhouette, and this delivered exactly the finish I was after. Wanting to ground the look with a chunky shoe, I reached for a pair of brown leather Chelsea boots and styled the coat with a simple tee and relaxed blue jeans, but it would also look great worn with tailored trousers or a black slip dress. The coat hit my mid-calf, which is a nice length on me, so if you're any shorter it might require hemming.

Style notes: Somehow, I seem to have evaded the leopard-print trend so far this season, but I was finally taken in this week by M&S' pretty leopard blouse. Looking for something I could weave into my daily wardrobe, this fun top stood out. With hook fastenings tracing down the centre, concealed by subtle bow detailing, the blouse—which I picked up in a 12—was easy to get on and off and could be worn fully buttoned or partially open.

I loved the puff-sleeve detailing and found this helped elevate the silhouette, whilst giving the design a playful edge. This is the kind of blouse that could be worked into so many looks, so I defaulted to a simple silhouette, styling it with classic blue jeans, red ballet flats and a studded bag. Ideal for milder autumn days, this lightweight blouse would sit well underneath a leather jacket or a black wool coat, but equally holds its own when worn by itself. I loved it with dark-wash, flared jeans and found it paired perfectly with the pop of red that the ballet flats offered.

With shakeups at some of the most major fashion houses, there have been some big changes at the top that are shaping where fashion is headed. Alessandro Michele presented his debut runway collection at Valentino which was one of the most anticipated shows of the week, while Chemena Kamali showcased her sophomore collection at Chloé. There are also more changes to come, which had everyone talking as showgoers awaited rumored announcements. Some of those arrived at the tail end of fashion week, including news that Hedi Slimane is stepping down from Celine and Michael Rider—the former Creative Director of Polo Ralph Lauren—will be taking the helm at the French fashion house. Everyone was eager to hear news about who would be moving into the open Creative Director role at Chanel, but no appointments have been confirmed yet.

What we do know is the direction fashion will be taking in 2025, or at least a glimpse of where it is aimed. The mood of the week was all about bringing back personal style and individuality and a sense of opulence back to fashion—a swing to the other side of the spectrum from quiet luxury and hyper-minimalism that has been dominating fashion. There was also a sense of joy and fantasy and lightness that has been missing from fashion in recent years that returned in full force, and is only set to grow as new creatives bring their perspectives to heritage houses. Ahead, more on the biggest spring/summer 2025 trends to know from Paris Fashion Week, and where style will go next year.

One thing is clear: 2025 will be all about individuality and the return of personal style, which stood out at Prada in Milan and carried through in Paris at brands such as Dries Van Noten and Valentino. For his debut runway show at Valentino, Alessandro Michele presented a maximal, more is more collection that was eccentric, opulent, and focused on looks that varied from model to model. In one, you might find a bourgeois polka dot blazer paired with a large sun hat and trousers. In another, a printed jacket and ruffled satin skirt styled with a fluffy stole, lace tights, and a beanie in a nod to new bohemian style. While the pieces in the collection were all a tribute to the Valentino archives, the styling suggested personal ways to wear them that brought a sense of individuality to the forefront of the fashion conversation. Expect pieces like pillbox hats, colorful skirts, and conversation-starting jackets incorporated into looks, or perhaps even worn together all at once.

The idea of this season's soft power dressing became crystal clear in Milan at Bottega Veneta, where powerful suiting was reimagined in relaxed silhouettes that at once felt strong, yet sophisticated and elevated—a sense of soft power dressing with a feminine-meets-masculine take on working girl style. This almost immediately picked up again at Paris Fashion Week, when Saint Laurent closed out the first day of shows with a strong collection showing looks styled with oversize tailored suiting worn with ties, thick-rimmed optical glasses, and big leather aviator jackets thrown on top. Stella McCartney, too, had an almost romantic take on suiting that infused draped skirts with blazers and trench coats. Loewe hammered this home, even tapping into a similar color palette of soft dove grey and chocolate brown.

Think pink! At least, that is most certainly what designers are thinking about when it comes to colors for spring. Throughout the past few seasons we've seen the major color trends focus on red, then burgundy, and now we'll be moving into shades of pink. The trends are truly spanning the spectrum of the red color family. We saw the powder pink trend take off in New York, where brands including Khaite and Alaïa endorsed the frothy, light colorway. In Paris, we saw these same hues prevail, as well as bolder shades of fuchsia that were dominant on the Hermès runway.

Elegance has one of the biggest fashion buzzwords of 2024. The return of pieces such as A-line skirts, bouclé jackets, pillbox hats, and elbow-length leather gloves has ushered in a nostalgic sense of elevated and sophisticated dressing that has inspired even the coolest insiders of the downtown fashion set. While I thought this sense of elegant fashion had already reached its heights, the latest collections from brands including Celine, Valentino, and Carven prove otherwise. It's a very bourgeois, very uptown take on fashion that is resonating in a major way and set to continue forward for spring.

Minimalism has been at the forefront of fashion for seasons and seasons. So much so that it's hard to trace back the origins of its dominance. Light, romantic, frothy pieces haven't been "cool" in a while but it seems that the tide is turning for spring/summer 2025. Florals have been reimagined in new forms, including voluminous hoop skirt dresses at Loewe and the sculptural tops and dresses at Victoria Beckham that almost appeared as if they were molded to the body. At Chloé, too, diaphanous chiffon gowns walked the runway in florals and solids alike, and had a clear romanticism to them.

Bring on the opulence. At least that is what designers are suggesting for fall, with collections that feel like they are the opposite of quiet luxury. Luxurious brocade jackets and jewel-toned ruffled skirts at Saint Laurent, heavily beaded metallic blazers and feathered dresses at McQueen, and puff-sleeved jackets at Louis Vuitton in bold prints all seem to suggest a return to a more-is-more approach to fashion centered around lavish textiles and risk-taking fashion choices. With all of the pared-back style that has dominated fashion in recent years, neutrals have become the standard and minimalistic style has become the uniform of choice, but why play it safe?

The return of lingerie dressing feels linked to the comeback of hyper-romantic style. One of the last major moments when boudoir dressing took hold of the fashion space collectively was spring 2016 when Phoebe Philo debuted lace-trimmed slip dresses in her collection for Chloé, and romance was a throughline in the fashion world. For the spring/summer 2025 collections we are seeing that make a return—at Balenciaga, looks with exposed bras, at Chloé there were almost nightgown-like pieces, and at Miu Miu we saw reimagined lingerie in dress forms.

We have been tracking the rise of sporty influences in fashion and it's safe to say that they are on the rise. It's hard to determine whether it's the impact of the recent Olympics or fashion's growing ties to the sports world or even the next iteration of streetwear on the runway, but the sporty impulse is present regardless of where it's coming from. The latest way that this is playing out is the rise of the nylon windbreaker on the runway. We saw a similar style in The Row's pre-fall 2024 collection, which went on to inspire editorials and land in the closet of Kendall Jenner. Now, new versions will influence the direction sporty style will take on and off of the runways for spring 2025.

I don't know what it is about this current season, but the shopping is exceptionally good. As a professional shopper of sorts, I have been so impressed by everything I come across, and it's made it tricky to decide what to commit to buying. On one hand, I want to hold out to see what else is coming down the pipeline, but I certainly don't want to miss out on getting what really has my attention—which leads me to where I'm at now. I'm sitting here reminiscing and reconsidering a bunch of the pieces I regret not buying this week.

Having noticed a few such spaces in my rotation with the switch from summer to autumn, I've been meaning to invigorate my wardrobe with the odd seasonal upgrade. Having chatted with Who What Wear UK's editor-in-chief Hannah Almassi, who just got back from Paris Fashion Week, I'm newly inspired to welcome in some of the autumn capsule staples she spotted over and again in the French capital.

"Whilst the outfits of those attending shows are always worth taking note of, it was those of Parisians—the stylish people who live in the capital year-round—that I found inspiring," says Almassi. Each season, one color trend has a meteoric rise and, in what seems like a matter of days, is suddenly everywhere. The beginning of 2024 was all about red, and then late spring ushered in the era of butter yellow. What color is poised to dominate fall '24? One scroll through social media will tell you that not one but two colors have secured the top spot this season: espresso brown and merlot red.

Chocolate, oxblood, burgundy—call them whatever you like, but dark brown and deep red are the official It colors of fall 2024. Unlike some color trends of the past, both are surprisingly wearable. Perhaps it's because both hues complement the traditional fall color palette, but as someone who doesn't always participate in color trends I've found espresso brown and merlot red easy to incorporate into my seasonal wardrobe. Whether it's adding a strategic accessory or going all out in a monochrome look, both hues feel on-trend yet classic at the same time. Since these colors have an air of timelessness to them, I decided to scour the internet for the absolute best pieces in both colorways. As much as I've tried to hold on to that summer feeling, as October rolls in, I'm finally succumbing to autumn. Style Notes: When searching for new additions to my autumn wardrobe, I knew I had to start with a trench coat. Lightweight, ready to take on the swift changes in weather and easy to layer up when cooler moments set in, there's a reason why this coat is a classic. Whilst camel shades are most synonymous with the style, the trench is such a day-to-night hero that I was looking for a versatile black iteration, and H&M came through.

Made from a soft twill fabric, H&M taps into the classic nature of the style with a double-breasted silhouette, easy tie belt and longline silhouette. A great trench coat is one of those few pieces able to support just about any look, be it a sleek work outfit or layered over an elegant dress for the evening. When styling for my try-on, I went simple to tie in with my style, putting it over a simple top, straight-leg jeans and some striking buckle boots to ground the look.

I took my normal size small in the trench, which still had room for a cosy knit underneath. The best-selling Slim Straight High Ankle Jeans fit perfectly in a size 10 and, I took the boots in my usual size.

Style Notes: If anything had me excited for autumn this year, it was the predicted return of boho styles thanks to Chloé's revival of the aesthetic on in its A/W 24 collection. As hoped, flowing blouses and dresses in light, sheer fabrics have returned in a big way for the new season, and H&M has been serving up stunning boho dresses since August.

Featuring a very autumnal deep burgundy shade, long ties to add to the fluidity of the piece and subtle stud detailing for an extra touch of intricacy, this romantic H&M dress ticks all the boxes. The top section is slightly sheer whilst the double-lined skirt offers more opacity. I tried my regular size small. The dress is certainly striking, so I stuck to understated accessories to complete the look. First, I turned to a pair of reliable ankle boots with a thick heel, which fit true to size. With a smooth leather look and pointed-toe finish, I know these sleek boots will complete all kinds of outfits, including jeans, tailoring and skirts. Finally, I reached for this super-expensive-looking bag which is practical in size yet impossibly chic in design.

Style Notes: When it comes to autumn dressing, knitwear is of course a key category, and H&M is offering up some seriously elegant (and warm) options. I was drawn in by a bold green jumper and a contemporary wrap cardigan, but as a minimalist, I settled on a soft cream style with thin black stripes and a cosy turtleneck.

Stripes are one of the only patterns that brings an element of design detail without completely stealing the show, making them truly timeless in appeal. What I love most about this jumper is the thin dimensions that feel even more considered and interesting than thicker stripes. One of the easiest ways to feel put-together, even when you have little time to get dressed, is to rely on classic colour combinations; and cream and black is a duo that always feels considered, especially in a refined knit and sharply tailored trousers. The pairing feels highly premium, no matter the price point.

Lucky for us, H&M has an array of nicer-than-nice styles, tapping into that boho aesthetic that now revived, is destined to stick around for a long time. Whilst the silhouette of the top is such a standout, the black shade offers ease of styling alongside the romantic sheer detailing. To dress it up for evening, I turned to the Wide Jeans, a best-selling pair for H&M. The style comes in a range of washes, but the true blue shade feels most wearable in my wardrobe, whether styled for evening or night. To elevate the look further, I chose the boots I wore above, with a pointed toe that can peek out in a very chic way from the wide hems. Style Notes: I know what you're thinking; no tights? I always find that my legs stay warm in autumn so long as I have cosy socks on, and this look, although it features of a miniskirt, utilises them in the best possible way. Of course, you can add tights should you need it, but this preppy pleated-skirt look is near perfection already.

Style Notes: Suede jackets are a huge, huge trend this autumn. This is excellent news for this inherently cold person, as suede is one of the toastiest fabrications out there. While a brown style will pair beautifully with a myriad of outfits, I like it most with tailored trousers and a cashmere knit, as seen on Dawn.

7. Jumper + Slip Skirt + Boots

Style Notes: A slip skirt? For autumn? It might sound groundbreaking, but really it's a sensible choice. The fluid fabric will glide over any tights underneath (if it doesn't, spritz your legs with hairspray—that'll do the trick!) and, in place of a vest top or T-shirt, add a chunky knit into the equation. Some boots won't hurt, either.

It wouldn't be a Ghesquière design without taking risks, which was evident in the looks that opened the collection—18th-century silhouettes like strong shoulders, pulled-in waists, and peplum hems were styled with biker shorts and chunky sandals that brought them back to the present. Despite pulling inspiration from the Renaissance, he didn't let that box him in, also adding '80s-inspired skater skirts and ruffled dresses to the offering. The five final looks featured a collaboration with French artist Laurent Grasso from his series Studies Into the Past, in which modern and celestial phenomena are inserted into Renaissance paintings, proving there was no shortage of historical and futuristic references at Louis Vuitton S/S 25.

Without context, these combinations might feel confusing to some, but when you take a look at his history of the designer's futuristic undertones and how it's changed the course of fashion in the grand scheme, there's a strong sense of direction found in the decisions. “I think if you don’t put yourself in aesthetic danger every season, you’re not playing the game of fashion," he told Vogue about his risk-taking before presenting the 2025 collection.

Zendaya Stole the Show

Would it be fashion month without a Zendaya sighting? As one of the faces of the brand, the actor arrived at the 2025 show wearing an exaggerated blazer and ruched bubble skirt, a powerful retro look that could only be conjured up by the mind of Law Roach. On theme with the show's references, the boxy blazer with oversize lapels was reminiscent of the suits worn by working women in the '80s. To carry the theme of finding innovation and beauty in sartorial differences, contrast was created with the pairing of a bubble-hem miniskirt. Even wearing parts of a striking suit, Zendaya managed to emulate the "soft power" that was centered in the 2025 collection.

An Ode to the Trunks

Innovation is key to bringing a luxury brand into the future, but it's always important to make sure the essence and history of the brand is not completely lost, which is never the case with Louis Vuitton. The runway was made of multicolored trunks, reminding the audience of the brand's beginnings as a luggage and packing shop founded in Paris in 1854. Vuitton's trunks, which have been continuously sought after as the epitome of true luxury, have become synonymous with the brand's craftsmanship, so it only made sense to include this historical element in the time-travel journey Ghesquière took attendees on.

Clashing Prints, Peplums, and Long Necklaces Dominated

In the show notes, Ghesquière declared that he was mirroring a form of "soft power" but aimed to re-create the standard of what it means to be soft in fashion. His version of softness is found in the movement and fluid nature of how each piece is designed, like coats and jackets designed to feel unstructured and airy like blouses. Each look played with geometry, asymmetry, texture, and prints—1920s necklaces were paired with striped gowns, tweed-like peplum jackets were layered over colorful breeches, and lace dresses were dramatized with feather-adorned shoes.

After all, why couldn't chaotic prints and color-blocking also be blended with exaggerated balloon sleeves and 3D embellishments? When these boundaries are stretched, it makes room for a future of diverse design possibilities we may not even think to imagine currently. "Sartorial soft power can also be a striking back-and-forth between two contradictory yet harmonious opposites. The suppleness of structure. Intractable lightness. Mastering vibrations. Spidery depths. Ethereal opulence. Razor-sharp delicacy. Resolute femininity. The mechanics of fluidity," he wrote.

All Eyes on the Bags

The handbags are always a focus at Louis Vuitton, and along with the clothes, they managed to continue to blend traditional and contemporary designs. Iconic silhouettes like the Speedy were included but modernized with tricked-out details like a bold chunky chain and crocodile handles. The GO-14 also made an appearance on the runway but with a maximalist makeover, presented in sleek leather and adorned with metal fringe scattered across the bag and silver chain weaved into the quilting pattern of the bag, adding dramatic flair to the classic design.

Newer styles were also sprinkled in, like a bag that offered the same east-west shape as the Speedy but was crafted with a softer and more fluid leather, leading to a slouchier effect. Double-bag layering has been spotted plenty on the runways this year, and Vuitton’s take included large structural totes in neutral leathers and LV-monogrammed shoulder bags in punchy colors like fuchsia and magenta.

The venue was also surrounded by screaming K-pop fans, there to cheer on Blackpink's Lisa, who was named Louis Vuitton's global ambassador earlier this year. As she grew further into the fashion circuit, many luxury partnerships were always suspected, but the superstar had been dropping hints about the partnership with Louis Vuitton through her outfits. With her recent solo expedition away from Blackpink, Lisa has leaned into the full rock-star look, evident by her outfit choice for the show, which featured an oversize leather trench and bag decked out with LV charms. Along with Zendaya and Lisa, other notable attendees were Cate Blanchett, the Haim sisters, Ana de Armas, and Who What Wear's October cover star, Hoyeon Jung.

I suspect I know what you're thinking now: Are these microtrends going to date quickly? As is the way with so many trends we see come to the fore, especially in the age of social media, it's impossible to know how long they'll stick around. Style Notes: Now that it's officially autumn, knitwear has become a key consideration once more. Style Notes: We've already talked about leopard print's rise in 2024 and now, by association, I'm seeing a lot of interest in other animal prints, too. Namely cow print, which Google reports a 210% spike in searches for. Although I have seen the trend carry through to jackets and coats, it's cow-print shoes that are noticeably on my feed. From boots to ballet flats, the shopping options are endless also.
