As a substitute for black, brown pieces offer a cosier, softer and—dare I say it—more polished alternative. It removes the hardness of black staples, and instead feels altogether softer and very seasonally appropriate. And with the number of brown style options available this season, from designer and high street favourites alike, I'm definitely sold on introducing this colour into my cold weather wardrobe.

So the question is: how to style it? As I mentioned, brown is a blissfully easy swap for your black go-tos. Pair with cream, white, navy, greens—pretty much anything. Personally, I've invested in a brown wool coat this season, and I'm surprised to find that it's actually even more versatile than my black style from last season. Style Notes: I'm such a huge fan of wearing a cardigan buttoned up as a top, and this is such a great example of using that trick as the basis of a monochromatic look. Thanks to the brown tones, the whole thing is much softer than if it was in all black.

Style Notes: Knit dresses are a cold weather essential, and this mole brown tone is especially versatile. I love how it works with another autumn staple—the wool coat.

Style Notes: One of my favourite iterations of brown is leather, which is why I'm obsessed with this brown leather skirt ensemble. The contrast of the shiny leather with the ultra soft knit is so delicious.

Style Notes: Recently, I've spotted so many influencers embrace the Seventies style of wide-leg fit corduroy trousers. I love how Liv has layered hers with pale beige tones—it creates such a cosy autumn look.

Style Notes: I'm bracing for the really cold weather, and this look is the one I'm planning on recreating once the brisk winds really pick up. It's so effortlessly sophisticated and classic (and practical), you could really wear for any occasion.

Style Notes: Yes, brown jeans really are a thing. My advice is to follow this example and opt for lighter wash jeans so you can layer with chocolate-toned knits.

Chemena Kamali brought on the boho revival at Paris Fashion Week in February, so it was only fitting that attendees showcased their take on the style on their way to this season's shows. One brand that comes up time and time again is Whistles. No surprise there—you’ll have no doubt seen our autumn dressing guides and capsule-wardrobe edits brimming with its joyous colourful knitwear, premium leather pieces and denim. But this season seems stronger than ever. Maybe I’ve just been wearing cotton minidresses for too long and have been starved of really good, wrap-up-worthy pieces for too long, but I don’t think it’s that. Standout staples from the recent Whistles collection—and current obsessions that live in my mind rent-free—include but are not limited to this sublime patchwork denim button-down.

In recent years, Whistles has broadened its horizons and feels more at the forefront of our minds when perusing the high street on a Saturday afternoon (or online during a lunchtime scroll). From its cool collaborations with It-girl brand Hai, the truly phenomenal bridal collections that really have proven you don’t need to spend a fortune on a wedding dress; or most recently, its new bricks-and-mortar store in Covent Garden, Whistles seems to be going from one success to another.

Speaking of the Covent Garden space—have you been yet? Having opened its doors on 13 September, this brand-spanking new store is the latest flagship. With contemporary interior features that feel as sleek and sumptuous as the brand’s collections, expect exposed-brick walls, terracotta tiles and stone features over the two floors. As for its services, the bespoke styling suite offers complimentary 1-2-1 personal styling appointments, tailored to the customers' needs. Brides-to-be can also pre-book private wedding appointments, where they can tap into expert advice to find their perfect dress. All appointments can be booked in-store or online here.

I went to the new store to check out the space and see the brand-new A/W 24 collection. Using the swanky new changing rooms, I styled four looks that caught my eye and that will no doubt be on heavy rotation for me in the coming months. Be it the perfect black suit for office days or sequinned tops for dinner dates and special occasions, these are the pieces I was most drawn to.

Style Notes: What is a wardrobe without a great pair of jeans? Whistles denim is second to none, as is its co-ords offering. This season, the brand has created this denim two-piece with the option of barrel-fit jeans or a longer, wide-leg silhouette. There’s nothing more classic than blue denim with red, so when I saw these ballet flats, I reached for them immediately. The silk scarf is by one of the independent brands that Whistles stocks in store, Sahar by ModestMira, which I love to wear either tied on my handbag, or if I want to up the French-girl aesthetic, around my neck and tucked into my collar.

Style Notes: PSA: Whistles has some excellent going-out looks ahead of party season, including this sequinned top and black PVC midi skirt. Of course, there’s more to come in the next few months, but this is a great start. What I love most about both these items is that you can easily dress them down. The top could be worn for lunch or dinner with jeans and a white, strappy top underneath, or to elevate it, I would just wear a chic bra (see-through tops are everywhere right now). Similarly, the skirt would be super cute for the office with a cosy knit. Versatile, wearable pieces is definitely this brand’s strong suit!

Style Notes: Part of Whistles' Limited Edition collection for A/W 24 are a few pieces featuring this fantastic horse print. If, like Bella and Gigi Hadid, you’re a #HorseGirl (or even if you're not but you’d like to emulate the TikTok trend, like me), these silky items are perfect. Made from super-soft satin, they feel and look extremely premium and are very comfortable to wear. I wanted to bring out the '70s vibe with this dress, so I layered it with the Bonded Leather Sleeveless Blazer and some suede knee-high boots. This dress is truly one of those you can wear for many—or any—occasions. Date night? Check! Back-to-back meetings in the office? Check! There’s also a button-down in the collection with the same motif, which would look great with flared blue jeans.

Style Notes: If I'm honest, the clothing I wear most at this time of year is tailoring. Between fashion month and the festive season, the fashion calendar is very busy, and like the rest of the team, I find myself dashing around town between events and meetings almost every day of the week. Because of this, I look to comfortable pieces that are well-cut and comfortable, and I like to play with how I style them. This mint green button-down, also from the Limited Edition collection, is a favourite. With a slender boot and belt, the suit feels polished but not boring. To dial it down, the pants would also suit a chunkier ankle boot or sneaker, paired with Whistles' classic Bonded Leather Jacket (one of its signature designs). It works both ways.

The thing is, though, the timeless classic sometimes needs a little new season shake-up to feel wearable again. Which is why I've been on the lookout for some autumn ways to style roll neck jumpers. Typically, the Australia-born megastar aces airport style. From denim-on-denim designs to three-piece suits, Blanchett isn't one for keeping it casual. This jumpsuit outfit, while certainly chic, seems much more fashionable than functional. Completely disrobing to use the restroom is not ideal, especially in the air, and wearing a one-piece makes it unavoidable. Blanchett's matching white sneakers, however, are a step in the right direction.

I grew up in a household where a nice pair of black slacks drew endless accolades. Packing for a trip? Heading out for dinner? Dressing for a job interview? As far as my mother was concerned, when it comes to wearing black pants, you simply cannot go wrong—particularly when pairing them with a chic blazer or an on-trend leather jacket.

As it turns out, my mum is in good company. All sorts of covetable black pants are clogging up my feed, from tailored trousers to cargos to slimmer cigarette styles. If you are partial to Parisian style, you'll be happy to know that three of my favorite French follows—Sylvie Mus, Salome Mory, and Anne-Laure Mais—are here with some very chic, easy-to-copy black-pant looks, complete with blazer and leather jacket ideas that are perfect for your fall rotation. Typical of French style, these six outfits are a little bit classic, a little bit trendy, and guaranteed to get you through any ambiguous dress codes this fall.

There's nothing chicer than classic black suiting, especially when paired with low-key flats. The addition of an on-trend tote is making the whole look very cool and commute-friendly. What more can we ask for, really?

Speaking of blazers, we aren't done with vegan-leather styles, especially the below option from Mango that's a little more cropped and likely to sell out. The pairing with black cargo pants and a white baby tee is very Jennifer Aniston '90s cool, but those burgundy flats are very 2024.

I know we love our neutrals, but I hate to think anyone shies away from jackets and coats in interesting colors for fear they aren't as wearable. Let this look be a little nudge toward experimenting with your outerwear, but go ahead and wear it with classic black trousers and accessories. Baby steps! You're doing great.

If you described this look to me over the phone—starting with the cargo parachute pants and ending with a strategically tucked button-down worn under a denim blazer—I would tell you it all sounds just a little bit wrong. In execution, it's either perfect or perhaps just further evidence that everything looks chicer with a bob. Either way, black cargo pants and suede sling bags are underlined on my fall shopping list.

Skinny, cigarette-style pants are fall's answer to the capris that accidentally took over our looks late this summer. The ultra-polished, slightly retro style feels good paired with less structured pieces, like an oversize tee and suede jacket. If you're struggling to snap up a suede jacket at the moment, take a little stroll into the menswear section.

I'm throwing in a black-jeans look—partly because we deserve it and partly because this fall outfit from Sylvie Mus is just too good not to share. Swapping in non-denim black pants and a chic little belt will add extra polish to your vintage or vintage-inspired fall items.

From Mary-Janes to knee-high boots, a typical French style wardrobe comprises a handful of footwear heroes and the ankle boot is a heavily relied upon choice from September onwards. French brands Sandro, Sézane and Isabel Marant (to name a few) hone in on the ankle boot style yearly, with classic shapes in deep colours, lacquered fabrications, croc-effect and suede — French women need a way to continue wearing straight-leg jeans in the autumn, after all.

Although streamlined boots with pointed silhouettes and Western details are much-loved among Gallic women, they've also inherited the Chelsea boot style over the past few years, owing to its practicality and classic shaping. While most are mourning the end of summer, I, personally, am very excited about the arrival of cooler temperatures. I always feel my most stylish during the autumn/winter season. I finally get to bring out my vintage leather jackets, favourite boots, cool layers and find new and creative ways to style my existing wardrobe. While I don’t necessarily believe in 'wardrobe must-haves', mainly because I think people should wear whatever they want, but if I did, I’d say a relaxed blazer is one of them.

I have a couple of enviable options in my rotation but the preloved men's blazer that is the focus of this column is a top contender, and seeing as it’s currently Secondhand September, I figured this would be the perfect choice for this month's story. “But Seun, where did you find it?” I hear you ask. Well, I found it in 2019, on my lunch break, in Oxfam, for Eight English Pounds. Yep!
